Nice tests you are doing, Alex. I love the Varicam for the tonal separation it has; I prefer how it's handling the reds better. Which one do you prefer? Also, is dynamic range comparable between both cameras? Or Komodo has the edge? I have no experience with the Komodo... I own a Varicam LT (recording raw to an Atomos Shogun inferno) and an EVA1, and I love them both. However, the Varicam is in another league. Amazing you can find the Varicams for such low prices right now!

Yeah, it's pretty impressive. The more I use the red file format, the more I like the potential of the raw work flow. Looking forward to getting my hands on one of RED's more advanced sensors to see what kind of images it can produce. This is a fun little video :)

Thanks! Tiffen. But I get great results with the cheapo ones on Amazon. Just make sure to buy a little larger than your lens so you can use the best part of your glass. I have one expensive set in LA and one rugged set in Chicago, and honestly I can't tell that much of a difference except on the +10. hope that helps :)

hey hey! Thanks for watching. I am sharing some tech tests for a short film I am directing (and shooting). The good news is, I am going to make some tutorials next month on color for the movie. The bad news is, I do everything in DaVinci (maybe not bad news if you use DaVinci too). Also I hate the LOG look, I love color!!

@@fourth1000 what cam do you have now? Tbh I was totally stuck on Varicam but it started getting too big to lug around. So I decided to start using my Komodo bcz it's so small and global shutter. Now Im starting to really see that camera doesn't matter, and post production is the key. R3D codec is the best. I'm gonna post some wide shots over the weekend. Get ready!

I did this all in Davinci with a few nodes. I can make a tutorial on how I do grading if you’re interested, but it won’t be until after August. We are currently working on a film. Will be using this look for on set monitoring :)

@@AlexDerrick_DP Thanks for your response ! Love the texture, soft and sharp, I've been trying lots of film emulations on the market but it's not as beautiful as yours. I would only use it for personal projects with cheap equipment, what nodes would you recommand, it seems like soft and sharpen ? Many thanks

@@sylvestrejulien8805i don’t use any out of the box emulation. most of the look is the lenses and lighting. and also film grain helps break apart the digital sharpness. Which camera r u using ?

@@AlexDerrick_DP I'm using FUJI XS-20, I can record in 4:2:2 10 bits, I love the way you 'textured' the video, there is a big difference when you show the comparison between Rec709 and cine film look at the end of the video. Maybe you have a simple nodes tree to share so I can try ? Thanks !

Previous camera is Panasonic Varicam LT. I still love Varicam and have done some shoot outs between the two. 1) Komodo is smaller 2) R3D is a better (best) codec than AVC-Intra and it’s easy to get a great looking image really quickly by eye. Varicam has more painterly colors but you need a color chart to really nail the color. Very hard to do it by eye. 3) smaller form factor means more fun to shot and take around and get footage and also less expensive rigging. Love both, but might sell Varicam for a Raptor X. Definitely liking RED a lot more now that i know how to use it

Varicam and Eva is great combination. If you are strong at color grading they can produce really great images. The Varicam is still in another league compared to Eva tho... That sensor just has a something.

You may want to grab a cheap PC as if your Mac is anything current from the last 5 years the drivers won't work for it

You need to power the reader AND plug it into the computer. It needs two separate usb cords. Do u have that? And your computer doesn’t really matter once you get the files on your computer

​@@AlexDerrick_DPliterally just did a shoot using raw via Ninja v and my goodness. I have so much latitude and post. I shot on a gloomy day and I still had a lot of Shadow detail I can't wait to pull out.

The alternative to the LT is Arri Classic? What don't you like about the Komodo? You need to know how to light for R3D code to get the most out of that camera.

That is true, but Sigma is very sharp lens almost like prime. Also Sony lenses on work on Sony camera. E Mount does not work in Panasonic Varicam. Hi. Sony camera has to use Sony lenses for autofocus. Cant use e Mount lens on Panasonic. All around in my opinion Sony image felt very thin compared to Varicam in post. Great camera for run and gun and you need autofocus. And Sony color is much improved. With a few tweaks could get it close to Panasonic.

It is my understanding that to get the best performance from Raw recording it is best to black shade the sensor before shooting. As this ensures that the data capture will be free from fixed pattern noise and have the best noise floor. This is for raw recording. On Panasonic Bcz it is compressed w the codec avc-Intra there will always be some softening of the image and possibly some internal processing that reduces noise floor. As I have seen prototype footage from the Varicam 35 that had no internal noise compression and it was very different looking than the final Public release of Varicam for industry use. But hey I bought another Komodo. Bcz 16bit R3D and global shutter just make awesome pictures. And red color science it is very easy to get a filmic look. And Panasonic i feel leans a little into the broadcast colors too much. Thanks for watching. I’ve never black shaded Varicam. I didn’t know this was even an operation the camera can perform . That sensor is in a league of it own. I showed the boot times, Bcz many DPs were complaining about the boot time of the Varicam when it was released, and I don’t think 17-18 seconds is a long time at all. Thanks for watching. Cheers
